Ina Mae Kaplan Historic Preservation Grant

Description: Recognizing the increasing importance of preserving our nation’s historic treasures the IFDA Educational Foundation established the Ina Mae Kaplan Historic Preservation Grant. The grant applicant must be involved in the interior furnishings industry or a related field and also involved in historic preservation/restoration of a public building or significant structure. The following are eligible activities and projects for which this Grant may be used: Obtaining services of consultants with expertise in areas such as architecture, planning, paint, wall covering or floor covering analysis, archeology, fund raising, media relations, education or graphic design. Include photographs or illustrations of the project, what role you would play and estimated costs, and timeline. Designing, producing and marketing print and video communications materials. Sponsoring preservation/restoration conferences and workshops. Designing and implementing innovative preservation/restoration educational programs. Financing an adaptive reuse project. Include photographs or illustrations of the project, what role you would play and estimated costs, and timeline.

Award: $2,000

Eligibility: Grant is to be awarded to an individual in the interior furnishings field, a design professional, or an organization involved with historic preservation/restoration.

COVID-19 Science Fund

Description: In response to worldwide disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Geographic Society is providing funding for projects focused on how humanity and the natural world have reacted to and are living through the unparalleled circumstances created by COVID-19 in order to better understand how this pandemic—or the threat of another—will shape our world for years to come. Proposed projects should seek to better understand and/or provide solutions to the situations created or magnified by the pandemic, thereby helping us to understand and address the challenges and changes of living in a COVID-19 world. This fund invites research, conservation, and technology projects on the following two topics:

Community-based and inclusive wildlife and cultural heritage site conservation.
Impacts of tourism changes on cultural heritage sites and wildlife.

Below are examples of the types of questions and projects that the Society would like to receive:
How have community and grassroots organizations dedicated to the conservation and protection of wildlife and cultural heritage sites been impacted by COVID-19? How have organizations continued their conservation activities during the pandemic? What types of new models or innovative approaches to conservation are being tried? With people unable to afford to stay in cities, how are rural communities shaped and changed by people returning? Given the ongoing economic crises due to COVID-19, what lessons can be applied post pandemic to support sustainable and just economic recovery in areas with high biodiversity and/or cultural heritage resources? How have changes in global and/or domestic tourism affected wildlife, protected area management, cultural heritage site conservation, and the livelihoods and well-being of nearby communities? Award: Up to $50,000.

Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years or older. Only applications that propose activity in the applicant’s country of residence will be considered.

Deadline: Statement of interest accepted through 11:59 pm EDT, March 31, 2021. Applicants will receive decisions on their statement of interest by April 8, 2021. Full applications will be due by 11:59 pm EDT, May 19, 2021.

2021 Preservation Technology and Training Grants

Description: Provides funding for innovative research that develops new technologies or adapts existing technologies to preserve cultural resources. Grant recipients undertake innovative research and produce technical reports which respond to national needs in the field of historic preservation. PTT grants will support the following activities: innovative research that develops new technologies or adapts existing technologies to preserve cultural resources (typically $20,000); specialized workshops or symposia that identify and address national preservation needs (typically $15,000 to $20,000); and how-to videos, mobile applications, podcasts, best practices publications, or webinars that disseminate practical preservation methods or provide better tools for preservation practice (typically $5,000 to $15,000).

Award: $5,000-20,000

Eligibility: Federal agencies, states, tribes, local governments, and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply.

SPAM Publication Grant

Description: Through an annual series of Publication Grants, SPAM supports the authorship of articles or books by independent scholars, writers, students, and professionals in the following subject areas: the artistic contributions of the American modernists, and the history of public and private support for the arts in the United States. Publication Grants are intended to encourage non-academics to do original research, and to encourage academics to make their research accessible to the public. SPAM will include the work—published or unpublished—in all SPAM research archives and databases.

Award: Grants average $1,200.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from all individuals, but applicants with a clear and realistic publication plan will be favored by the selection committee.

Deadline: Applications must be received by March 15.

The Eric DeLony Industrial Heritage Preservation Grant Fund

Description: The Society for Industrial Archeology offers grants for the study, documentation, recordation, and/or preservation of significant historic industrial sites, structures, and objects. Awards are made to nonprofit organizations and qualified individuals. Contributions of in-kind services, as well as cash resources from the sponsoring and cosponsoring agencies may qualify for matching purposes. Funds may be used for a range of projects including, but not limited to: increasing public awareness of preservation efforts, photography, videography, preparing inventories and developing measured drawings of extant significant industrial sites, structures, maritime facilities and industrial artifacts. Grant recipients must agree to prepare a written summary of their project suitable for publication in either the SIA Newsletter and/or for Industrial Archeology, the Society’s scholarly journal.

Award: $1,000-3,000

Eligibility: Grants are open to qualified individuals, independent scholars, nonprofit organizations and academic institutions. Organizations are preferred over individuals. Substantial participation from state, county, or local history organizations is encouraged, although such groups do not necessarily need to be a sponsoring agency.

Barakat Major Awards Including Conservation and Conservation Training

Description: Supports fieldwork, research, study, exhibitions, conservation and documentation projects, and training of professionals in fields associated with history, heritage, conservation and archaeology relating to:
1) the history of art, architecture, and material culture of the Islamic world before 1920;
2) the archaeological investigation of the Islamic world;
3) the conservation of artifacts, buildings, and material culture produced in or for the Islamic world before 1920;
4) libraries, museums, and other public institutions exhibiting the art and material culture of the Islamic world before 1920;
5) education and training associated with 1-4; and
6) conferences, exhibitions, and publications associate with 1-4.

Award: Up to £10,000; awards may not be paid directly to individuals and must instead be paid either to the institution to which an applicant belongs or to the institution at or through which an applicant is applying to conduct research or to study.

Eligibility: Open to established scholars attached to research institutions, curators, and heritage professionals
