Defending Basic Freedoms

Description: The Herb Block Foundation is committed to defending basic freedoms, combating all forms of discrimination and prejudice, and improving the conditions of the poor and underprivileged. To advance this mission, the foundation is inviting applications for its Defending Basic Freedoms program, which will award grants of up to $25,000 for efforts to safeguard the basic freedoms guaranteed in the U.S. Bill of Rights, eliminate all forms of prejudice and discrimination, and help government agencies be more accountable to the public.

Award: Up to $25,000 over a one-year period.

Eligibility: Applicants must be tax-exempt as defined by section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Deadline: LOIs due Oct. 6. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by Nov. 17, 2021.

Description: The Clif Bar Family Foundation provides grants in support of grassroots organizations in the areas of the environment, food and agriculture, preventative approach to people’s health, and sustainable community development. Description: Program offers students from grade six through college opportunities to experience problem-solving of today’s and tomorrow’s energy challenges. Grants will be awarded in support of projects designed to enhance students’ understanding of science and technology and inspire them to think differently about energy. Projects should reach at least 100 students and align with the Constellation Energy to Educate Innovation Themes: Equity in Energy, Sustainability as a Lifestyle, and a Sustainable World. Award: Up to $25,000 for grades 6-12 and up to $50,000 for colleges and universities

Arts in Action Grants

Description: Arts in Action provides funding for projects that connect USC faculty and students with LA community partners and use the arts to promote positive social change. Arts in Action builds on and extends USC’s historic commitment to addressing some of society’s most intractable problems. Arts in Action projects incorporate a range of arts-based practices designed to identify and tackle systemic forms of oppression connected to, for example, homelessness, mass incarceration, the COVID-19 pandemic, racism, gender oppression, sustainability and climate justice, educational inequity, xenophobia, and multiple forms of violence and hate. Arts in Action projects are often participant-driven, blurring the lines between “artist” and “audience.” The program prioritizes artwork that grows from a shared process and where the collaborative act of creating the work is core to the project’s impact and value. USC faculty and students working with community partners are invited to submit preliminary proposals for Arts in Action 2023 for projects beginning no earlier than February 1, 2023. These grants will support community-based projects that address social issues, bring people together, facilitate dialogue, and create spaces to imagine and design future change.

Award: Grant amounts range from $3,000 to $28,000.

Eligibility: Eligible disciplines include the visual arts and design, dramatic arts, cinematic and media arts, music, dance, and architecture. Projects involving multiple art forms are welcome and encouraged. Proposals that include at least one faculty member from one of USC’s six arts schools are encouraged and will be prioritized. Teams comprised of faculty/students from multiple USC schools are encouraged. Projects that centrally involve students are strongly encouraged. Project outputs should include at least one free public-sharing event, and projects should include at least one community partnership. Please see RFP for full guidelines.

Craft Research Fund – Exhibition Grant

Description: The Craft Research Fund – Exhibition grant is one of four categories that make up the Craft Research Fund, a visionary program dedicated to supporting scholarly craft research in the United States. The grant is intended to support scholarly research and is not for the creation of artwork. Examples of exhibition research might include: addressing work by significant craft artists; presenting a new understanding of the relationship between handmade production and digital technologies; placing American craft in a global context; or other topics that offer fresh perspectives within the field. Grant funds may be used to support research activities including travel for research, commissioning essays for contributors, documentation such as images or rights to use images or text, as part of the research for future exhibitions.

Award: Up to $15,000

Eligibility: Proposals welcome from museum, non-profit gallery, and independent curators. Applicants must be 18 years or older. Organizations must limit staffing/overhead costs to 15% of total budget ask. Applicants may not apply for both the project grant and exhibition grant in the same year. See website for full details.

California Resilience Challenge

Description: The California Resilience Challenge is a statewide effort, led by businesses, utilities, and a diverse range of partners, to build local and regional climate resilience and to support a shared vision for a resilient California in the face of increasing climate threats. The Challenge is providing grants for diverse, replicable and innovative climate change adaptation planning projects across California. These projects will reflect California’s diverse geography and showcase leadership in climate change adaptation. Eligible projects will consist of planning projects that are targeted at improving local or regional resilience to one or more of the following four climate challenges and water and air quality impacts of the foregoing: drought, flooding, including from sea level rise, extreme heat and increasing frequency of hot days, and wildfire. Graham Foundation Individual Grants

Description: For individuals, the Graham Foundation’s priorities are to: provide opportunities to create, develop, and communicate a project about architecture and the designed environment that will contribute to their creative, intellectual, and professional growth at crucial or potentially transformative stages in their careers; support their efforts to take positions, develop new forms of expression, and engage debate; help them communicate their work in the public realm and reach new and wider audiences; and support new voices by giving priority to first-time applicants.

There are two types of grants for which individuals may apply: Production & Presentation Grants and Research & Development Grants. Production and Presentation grants assist individuals with the production-related expenses that are necessary to take a project from conceptualization to realization and public presentation. These projects include, but are not limited to publications, exhibitions, installations, films, and new media projects. Research and Development Grants assist individuals with seed money for research-related expenses such as travel, documentation, materials, supplies, and other development costs. Award: Production and Presentation Grants: up to $20,000 but likely to be less; Research and Development Grants: up to $10,000 but likely to be less.

Eligibility: Individuals eligible to apply; collaborative projects by individuals eligible for funding; individuals may apply for only one grant per year; and applicants who have received prior Graham Foundation support must have satisfied all grant requirements before applying again.

California Environmental Grassroots Fund

Source: The Grassroots Fund is a pooled re-granting fund supported by about 20 funding partners with the Rose Foundation serving as host and trustee.

Description: The California Environmental Grassroots Fund supports small grassroots groups across California that are tackling tough environmental problems including toxic pollution, urban sprawl, sustainable agriculture, climate change, environmental degradation of our rivers and wild places, as well as, of our communities and our health. Guided by a board of community activists and veteran funders, the Fund’s mission is to bridge a significant gap between grassroots environmental groups and the traditional funding patterns of organized philanthropy by awarding small grants to small organizations that are underserved by most foundations’ funding strategies. Issues supported include but are not limited to environmental health & justice, land management & urban sprawl, habitat & wilderness protection, sustainable forestry, water resources, agriculture, sustainability, and pollution.

Award: Up to $5,000

Eligibility: Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria: project impact must be within California; organization must have annual income/expenses of $100k or less; and applicants may be a nonprofit, be fiscally sponsored by another nonprofit, or ask for fiscal sponsorship from the fund. Deadline: The Grassroots Fund has an application deadline every three months. Applications must be submitted by 5 pm on the deadline date of: Feb. 1, May 1, Aug. 1, and Nov. 1. If the deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or official holiday, then submissions are due at 5pm on the next business day.

Strategic Directions for Research Award

Description: The Strategic Directions for Research Award (SDRA) Program supports innovative, interdisciplinary, collaborative research that involves faculty groups from multiple USC schools. The goal of this competitive funding opportunity is to identify areas of USC interdisciplinary strengths that present opportunities for cross-school collaboration and sustainable future external funding. Faculty teams across USC are welcome to apply. Applying teams must show their qualifications, creativity, and ability to make USC a leader in a significant area of study, as well as the sustainability of the proposed research with external funding.

Award: $150,000-300,000 for one year

Eligibility: Proposing PIs must be full-time tenure-track or non-tenure track faculty. Visiting and adjunct faculty are not eligible to apply. Proposing team must include at least two faculty members who hold primary appointments from two different USC schools and must include at least one assistant professor (tenure-track or non-tenure track). To encourage research sustainability, the teams are expected to provide specific external funding targets for continuing the research beyond the end of the award, including the funder, program name, and application/proposal submission dates.
