Description: This grant furthers advanced study in any area of architectural investigation that will effectively contribute to the knowledge, teaching, or practice of the art and science of architecture. The proposed investigation is to result in a final written work, design project, research paper, or other form of presentation.

Award: Single or multiple awards of up to $15,000.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens engaged in the profession of architecture or a related field. They must have received their first professional degree at least five years prior to the date of application.

Schwarz Fellowship at the Gennadius Library for Research on Urban Architecture

Description: The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture supports innovative and cross-disciplinary research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Fields of study include Architectural and Urban Design, History of Architecture, History of the City, Historical Geography, and related fields. Projects should incorporate the holdings of the Gennadius Library (maps, topographical plans, landscapes, etc.) and other appropriate resources of the School.

Award: A stipend of $11,500 plus room and board and waiver of School fees. It is expected that the applicant will maintain a physical presence at the Gennadius Library during the tenure of the appointment from early September to late May. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library. Fellows are expected to participate in the academic life of the School.

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. holders within five years of receiving the degree. Open to all nationalities.

Architecture External Residency

Art Omi: Architecture Residency

Description: The Art Omi: Architecture residency program invites ten early- to mid-career architects from around the world to develop their work during a full two-week residency on Art Omi’s campus. Architecture Residents are selected on the basis of their individual proposed project and portfolio. Completed projects are presented in an informal critique setting at the end of the residency period, with visitors invited to see the proceedings. Each year a distinguished Architecture Critic is invited to visit and meet with the residents during the last weekend of the residency and will lead the final presentations where the public can observe this key aspect in the process of making architecture. Applicants must submit and describe a project they wish to work on, on their own, while at Art Omi. Projects may be conceptual or practical and may be an on-going or existing project that requires completion or a new design scheme to be initiated and completed by the end of the residency. Projects may not be client based nor directed. In all instances a visual presentation and a final work product is required. This may be in the form of drawings, maquettes, collages, digital images and the like. Written manuscripts and essays are not to be worked on nor initiated while at Art Omi.

Award: Two-week residency; participants receive individual accommodations and dedicated desk space. Chef-prepared dinner served daily for communal meals, and a fully stocked kitchen provides plentiful food for lunch, breakfasts, and snacks. Each resident is expected to bring their own design tools, with some limited printing and up to $50 allowance for materials provided.

Eligibility: Open to architects from any part of the world that have been professionally active for at least the past six (6) years since professional licensing or obtaining an M. Arch. degree in the U.S. or internationally. Applications will be accepted from early and mid-career architects in active practice or in academia with an architectural design teaching concentration. Students currently enrolled in any B. Arch, M. Arch, or PhD program are ineligible. A Master’s degree in Architecture and/or an architectural license IS a requirement.

Architecture Competition External

The Forge Prize 2022

Description: This competition, established by The American Institute of Steel Construction in 2018, recognizes visionary emerging architects for designs that embrace steel as a primary structural component and capitalize on steel’s ability to increase a project’s speed. See website for more info.

Award: Three finalists will each win $5,000 and work with a steel fabricator before presenting their ideas to the judges–streamed live on YouTube. The winner will receive the $10,000 grand prize and an invitation to present at the Architecture in Steel conference, March 23-25, 2022 in Denver.

Eligibility: Open to designers based in the U.S. who are either still obtaining licensure or have been licensed for less than 10 years.

Description: The Currier Museum of Art invites applications for the second annual open call for its Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, awarding up to two residencies between fall 2022 and spring 2023. This program will provide support for selected self-identified emerging artists or artist groups (of up to three people) focused on social practice. Due to the flexible nature of this program, these residencies can be for a period of 6-12 weeks between mid-October 2022 and mid-March 2023. The AIR program is central to the Currier Museum’s mission of connecting audiences with art and creative thinking. This program deepens the mission through an open call to social practice artists who share the goal of impacting people through the transformative power of art. Applicants must demonstrate a history of social engagement in their artmaking practice and production. Successful applicants will develop an innovative project with tangible outcomes that align with the tenets of their own practice, the mission of the museum, and the needs of the community partner(s) with whom they will collaborate.

Award: Resident artists receive a stipend of $1,000 per week, travel allowance up to $500, materials support, and housing in a fully furnished home. In many cases, resident artists may be able to have spouses/children accompany them. Service animals are welcome.

Eligibility: Individual artists or collectives of up to three people are eligible to apply. Artists and collectives working in any media are eligible. Artists must be able to commit at least six continuous weeks in residence during mid-Oct. 2022 to mid-March 2021. Selected artist must be able to demonstrate that they are legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Loeb & Loeb/ArtLab Fellowship

Description Loeb Fellows are accomplished practitioners, influential in shaping the built and natural environment, whose work is advancing positive social outcomes in the US and around the world. In the middle of promising careers they step away from their hectic professional lives for one academic year. Fellows audit classes at the GSD and throughout the vast network of Harvard and MIT. They engage with faculty and students, participate in Fellowship events, and collaborate with their peers. They become part of a powerful growing network of colleagues passionately committed to revitalizing communities. The Loeb/ArtLab Fellowship is open to any artist or person with an artistic practice who applies for a Loeb Fellowship and meets the requirements thereof. The intention of a joint Loeb / ArtLab Fellowship is to give practicing artists the same Fellowship experience they would have as Loeb Fellows, with the added benefit of being granted studio space in the ArtLab building, research support and networking resources through the ArtLab community, as well as potential funding for proposed programs and/or projects over the course of the year.

Award: Academic-year fellowship; stipend; housing in Cambridge; and tuition-free auditing of classes at Harvard & MIT.

Eligibility: Mid-career professionals with 5-10 years of experience (minimum). The Fellowship is for practitioners. It is not a sabbatical program or an artist residency.

Steedman Fellowship

Description: Award is granted biannually to an emerging architect to support 6-12 months of international travel for architectural research. The 2021 Theme is Disruption. We are living in disruptive times…defined by climate crisis driving unprecedented current and future weather extremes and an ongoing global pandemic, alongside centuries of systemic racism in stark need of addressing. Radical solutions are required at all scales and systems. How does Architecture–in all its modalities–disrupt and drive change? How can architecture have a measurable impact? What are the disruptions to define the next decade? And will they redefine design? The Steedman is an award that fosters international research in architecture through investigations outside of one’s home country. In light of the COVID-19 and climate crises, extra consideration will be given to creative proposals that minimize carbon footprint. See website for more info.

Award: $75,000 award to support 6-12 months of international travel for architectural research

Eligibility: Open to anyone, anywhere in the world, who has received an accredited degree in architecture within the last eight years. Fellows must be able to complete their proposed projects within 18 months of receiving the award. Additionally, at the conclusion of their fellowship, Fellows must make arrangements to share their research with the Washington University and local AIA architectural communities.

Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant

Description: This grant is awarded to further the personal and professional development of an architect in early or mid-career through travel. Travel plans should be focused on a selected topic of interest to the individual rather than as part of a larger humanitarian or institutional endeavor. If appropriate, the winner may be asked to present at the Center for Architecture upon return.

Award: Single or multiple awards of up to $25,000

Eligibility: Applicants must be US citizens with a professional degree in architecture. They must also be practicing architects, either licensed or unlicensed. Academics may apply but must also be practicing architects.

SOM Research Prize

Description: SOM Foundation introduced the Research Prize to cultivate new ideas and meaningful research that addresses the critical issues of our time. Two $40,000 prizes will be awarded to faculty-led interdisciplinary teams based in the United States to conduct original research that contributes to the SOM Foundation’s current topic: Envisioning Responsible Relationships with Materiality. This year’s topic seeks to explore materiality from the micro- to the macroscale, bringing together designers and researchers from multiple disciplines in order to envision sustainable, responsible, and ethical relationships with materials and the communities that they come from. Award: $40,000

Eligibility: Open to faculty currently teaching at a professionally accredited bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD program in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design in the United States. The research must be developed in an academic studio or other research structure within the academic institution. The lead faculty member(s) will be expected to work in a collaborative manner with faculty from other disciplines, leading professionals, nonprofit organizations, and/or community representatives in addition to students enrolled in the studio. Collaborator(s) can be based worldwide. SOM Foundation affiliated members and SOM employees should not be included as part of the proposals. Faculty from previously awarded proposals are not eligible.

The Samuel H. Kress Mid-Career Fellowship

Description: Research grants of up to $15,000 may be awarded to a mid-career professional whose research project relates to the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture, and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States. Potential Kress Fellow projects could include the exploration of shared European and American influences in style, design, materials, construction techniques, building types, conservation and interpretation methodologies, philosophical and theoretical attitudes, and other factors applicable to preservation in both Europe and America. Award: Up to $15,000

Eligibility: Grants are awarded only to individuals, not organizations. The Foundation does not fund university-sponsored research projects or dissertation research. Applicants must be mid-career professionals in historic preservation or related fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, architectural conservation, urban design, environmental planning, archaeology, architectural history, and the decorative arts. Applicants must be legal residents or citizens of the United States.
