Postdoctoral Fellowships for Sustainability Solutions

Description: The University of Southern California (USC) is launching a unique, high-visibility postdoctoral fellowship program as part of Assignment: Earth, the USC campus-wide sustainability framework. The program aims to accelerate sustainability research; train future leaders in academia, government and non-governmental organizations, and industry; and support discovery, evaluation, and implementation of innovative solutions to sustainability problems. This postdoctoral fellowship seeks to advance the capacities of early-career scholars and researchers to conduct interdisciplinary research on sustainability problems. An interdisciplinary and diverse cohort of fellows will address challenges in one or more of the following areas: human health & well-being; infrastructure & the built environment; natural environment & ecosystem services; communications, policy & institutions; and risk analysis & economic impacts. Each fellow will be mentored by two or more USC faculty members from different disciplines. In addition to their primary affiliation with their chosen research groups, each fellow will dedicate ~20% of their time to programmatic activities with their cohort and other members of the campus sustainability community. See website for more info.

Award: The fellowships are typically 2-year appointments, with an anticipated start date between January and August 2023, and the potential of applying for a 3rd year as appropriate. Fellows will receive an annual salary of $75-80k (depending on stage of training), up to $3k for relocation expenses, a competitive benefits package, and $7k per year for research expenses, conference travel, and publication costs.

Eligibility: Candidates must have earned a doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., J.D.) within the previous five years in a relevant field of study prior to the start of the appointment. Applications from any field welcome.

Schwartz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture

Description: The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture supports innovative and cross-disciplinary research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Fellows are expected to be engaged full-time in the supported research from early September 2023 to late May 2024 and are expected to participate in the academic life of the School. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA acknowledge the support of the ASCSA and be contributed to the Gennadius Library.

Award: A stipend of $11,500 plus room and board in Loring Hall, and waiver of School fees.

Eligibility: Open to practicing architects or researchers of all nationalities who are currently Ph.D. candidates or have received their Ph.D. within the last five years. Fields of study include Architectural Design and Urban Planning, History of Architecture, History of the City, Historical Geography, and related fields. Projects should incorporate the holdings of the Gennadius Library (maps, topographical plans, landscapes, etc.) and other appropriate resources of the School.

Mahindra Center Postdoctoral Fellowships

Description: The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for six one-year postdoctoral fellowships on the topic of the environmental humanities, drawn from any humanistic discipline. Environmental humanities is interpreted in the broadest terms to include all parts of the world and historical eras. Topics may include (but are not limited to) humanistic approaches to climate change, biodiversity, social justice, environmental justice, food justice, regenerative practices, gardening, landscape, urban foraging, health, and animal studies.

Award: Fellows will receive stipends of $65,000, medical insurance, additional research support of $2,500, and (for those not already in residence in Greater Boston) $1,500 in moving expenses. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Harvard for the term of the fellowship.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from scholars in all fields whose work innovatively engages with the environment and the humanities. Applicants must have received a doctorate or terminal degree in or after May 2020. Applicants without a doctorate or terminal degree must demonstrate that they have completed all requirements for a terminal degree (i.e. dissertation defense) by August 1, 2023. Scholars from outside the U.S. are appointed under either the J-1 visa (Research Scholar status) or F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training), depending on their circumstances. If awarded a fellowship, the term of appointment for international scholars is September 1, 2023-August 31, 2024.

Center for Craft Teaching Artist Cohort

Description: Twenty-one mid-career craft artists will receive an unrestricted grant of $10,000 and participate in an 8-month cohort experience where they will be guided through training that encourages and sustains a generative practice a both artists and educators. Recipients will participate in creating a Teaching Artist Resource Kit to be completed by the culmination of the grant period’s end. A leading component of the Teaching Artist Cohort is to support a diverse cohort of mid-career artists with varying practices and career aspirations. Ideally, awards will be given to a dynamic group of craft artists whose practice includes working as teaching artists in schools, non-tenured educators, adjunct instructors, visiting artists, museum educators, and community and workshop instructors. 

Award: $10,000 grant and eight-month cohort experience

Eligibility: Proposals welcome from mid-career craft artists who teach. For the purposes of this grant, the Center for Craft defines a teaching artist as a practicing craft artist and/or maker who utilizes their skillsets and sensibilities to integrate their work and perspectives into a wide range of settings. Applicants must be 21 or older; eligible to receive taxable income in the U.S.; residing and working in the U.S. for the last two years and the duration of the fellowship; and have a continued full time studio practice for a minimum of five years and work as a teaching artist for a minimum of three years. 2023 Craft Research Fund Fellowship

Description: The Craft Research Fund—Artist Fellowship is one of four categories that make up the Craft Research Fund, a visionary program dedicated to supporting scholarly craft research in United States. Awards of $10,000 will be granted to five artists to support research projects that advance, expand, and support the creation of new research and knowledge through craft practice. The Center, and by extension this grant, recognizes craft to be a particular approach to making with a strong connection to materials, skill, and process. Examples of craft research might include: archive- and museum-based research; material innovations/experimentation; process-oriented research/innovation; historical research; collaborations amongst artists and/or other disciplines and/or institutions; or projects that have the potential to transform questions that are being asked in an academic context. Eligibility: Proposals are welcome from mid-career artists, artisans, designers, makers, sculptures, and so on, who identify their practice within the field of craft. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older; eligible to receive taxable income in the U.S.; and residing and working in the U.S. for the last two years and for the duration of the fellowship period. ACLS Fellowships

Description: ACLS invites research proposals from scholars in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences pursuing research on topics grounded in any time period, world region, or humanistic methodology. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant, which can take the form of a monograph, articles, digital publication(s), critical edition, or other scholarly resources. This program does not fund works of fiction (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects. See website for more info.

Award: ACLS Fellowships are intended to help scholars devote six to twelve continuous months to full-time research and writing. The awards are portable and are tenable at any appropriate site for research. The fellowship stipend is set at $60,000 for a 12-month fellowship. Awards of shorter duration will be prorated at $5,000 per month, with the minimum award set at $30,000. Independent scholars and adjunct faculty will receive an award supplement $7,500 for costs incurred during the research term, including research support, access to manuscript development workshops, learned society conference attendance, health insurance, or child- or eldercare.

Eligibility: Open to untenured scholars who have earned a PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences on or after September 29, 2014. Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, Indigenous individuals residing in the United States through rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794, DACA recipients, asylees, refugees, or individuals granted Temporary Protected Status in the United States.

2022 Pocantico Fellowship

Description: The Pocantico Center Preservation Fellowship is a two-week residential fellowship in historic preservation that provides the opportunity to reside and work in the historic Marcel Breuer House located at The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in Tarrytown, NY from June 21 through July 3, 2022. The fellowship is structured to provide professionals with two weeks of dedicated time for a defined project with significant benefit to the preservation field, such as work on a book, long article, or key speech/presentation on the future of preservation, and concerning matters of importance including social justice, diversity and inclusion, housing, equitable development, climate action, re-imagining historic sites, preservation trades and workforce development, telling a fuller history, or another topic of key importance to the preservation field today. 

Award: Lodging; $125/week for food; and domestic transportation to and from NYC will be covered.

Eligibility: Applications accepted from professionals in preservation or related fields.

Bogliasco Foundation Fellowships

Description: The Bogliasco Foundation supports the arts and humanities by providing residential Fellowships at its study center in Italy’s most vibrant, historic crossroads, where gifted artists and scholars of all cultures come together to connect, create and disseminate significant new work. Applicants may also apply for Special Fellowships, such as the Virginia Howard Fellowship or the Van Cleef & Arpels Fellowship in Landscape Architecture, which include additional support.

Award: 32- or 33-day fellowship includes room and board and a separate workspace but does not cover travel costs.

Eligibility: The Bogliasco Foundation accepts applications from those doing both creative and scholarly work in the following fields: Archaeology, Architecture, Classics, Dance, Film/Video, History, Landscape Architecture, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theater, and Visual Arts – without regard to nationality, age, race, or gender. Applicants should demonstrate significant achievement in their disciplines, commensurate with their age and experience. Students who are enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of the application are not eligible. Fellows must be able to speak English.

Stacy Lloyd III Fellowship for Bibliographic Study

Description: Awarded to one outstanding early-career scholar working in some area related to the history, art, and culture of plants, gardens and landscapes. The fellowship will be granted to an exceptional researcher who is developing a new body of research that would especially benefit from access to Oak Spring’s library. The award recipient will spend 2-8 weeks at Oak Spring where they will be able to meet with staff; explore the 700-acre landscape, the foundation’s efforts in sustainable land management, and the rare book library that holds over 19,000 objects including many examples of botanical art. Fellow will have time and space to work independently on their own projects during stay. The only requirement will be to give one 45-minute presentation with time for questions to Oak Spring Staff and any other fellows or residents on site.

Award: $10,000 grant and two-to-eight-week stay at Oak Spring

Eligibility: Eligible applicants must be early-career researchers completing a terminal degree, or who have completed a terminal degree within the past five years. The selected early-career researcher must be self-directed and able to work independently while on site. Applicants are expected to show exceptional promise with an ability to state how use of Oak Spring’s library will contribute to their research objectives, exceptional promise, good communication skills and excellence in what they have accomplished or plan to accomplish.

Eligible applicants will have some recognition in the form of exhibitions, commissions, performances, grant awards, residencies, fellowships and/or publications.
