2021 Abbey Mural Prize

Description: The National Academy of Design invites artists, architects, arts and community-based organizations, and other nonprofits to submit applications for the 2021 Abbey Mural Prize, which awards grants to support the commission of public murals in the United States. Building on a tradition of public murals as instruments of social activism, neighborhood revitalization, and community engagement, the Abbey Mural Prize aims to broaden support and recognition of the vital role that murals play in making public space more open and accessible. Grants will be awarded for the creation or restoration of public murals, especially those that promote accessibility, serve local audiences, and inspire community dialogue. The Academy will hold an Abbey Mural Prize Information Session on March 23, 2021.

Award: Grants typically range from $10,000 to $40,000 USD in minimally restricted support for the production and installation of mural(s) on and within public buildings and on buildings owned by charitable institutions.

Eligibility: Applications are open to all artists, architects, designers, as well as arts and community-based organizations and other nonprofits. Project leads must be eighteen years of age or over. Project proposals must be for sites located within the United States, Tribal Nations, and U.S. territories including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Projects must be public and have start dates before June 30, 2022.

Griffin/McKahan/Zilm (GMZ) Fellowship in Health Facility Planning & Design

Description: This fellowship was established by three leaders in healthcare planning through the AAH Foundation Legacy fund. Goals of this fellowship include to encourage research into healthcare programming and planning as well as into the general practice of healthcare architecture. See website for more info.

Award: Fellowship award(s) range from $2,000 – $9,000.

Eligibility: All applicants shall be enrolled or teaching in a program within disciplines such as architecture, interior design, industrial design and/or landscape architecture.

SPAM Publication Grant

Description: Through an annual series of Publication Grants, SPAM supports the authorship of articles or books by independent scholars, writers, students, and professionals in the following subject areas: the artistic contributions of the American modernists, and the history of public and private support for the arts in the United States. Publication Grants are intended to encourage non-academics to do original research, and to encourage academics to make their research accessible to the public. SPAM will include the work—published or unpublished—in all SPAM research archives and databases.

Award: Grants average $1,200.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from all individuals, but applicants with a clear and realistic publication plan will be favored by the selection committee.

Deadline: Applications must be received by March 15.

Architecture Design External Fellowship Residency

MacDowell Fellowship

Description: MacDowell provides time, space, and an inspiring environment to artists of exceptional talent. About 300 artists in seven disciplines are awarded fellowships each year and the sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence. Travel grants as well as need-based stipends are available to open the residency experience to the broadest possible community of artists.

Award: A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks. There are no residency fees.

Eligibility: Applications accepted from artists working in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. Emerging & established artists welcome to apply. Applicants who are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs as of the date of application are ineligible for a residency. Doctoral candidates who have finished all coursework may apply. Artists may apply only once every 24 months.

Architecture Design External Fellowship

2021 CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Architecture & Design

Description: CINTAS Fellowships acknowledge creative accomplishments and encourage excellence in architecture & design, creative writing, music composition and the visual arts. Candidates in the fields of architectural design, interior design, urban design and urban planning may submit applications for this fellowship. CINTAS fellows are free to pursue their artistic activities as indicated in their application.

Award: $20,000

Eligibility: Creative artists of Cuban citizenship or direct lineage (having a Cuban parent or grandparent). Applicants engaged in research, students, or performing artists are not eligible to apply for CINTAS Fellowships. CINTAS Fellowships can only be awarded a maximum of 2 times to an individual.

Architecture Design External History / Theory Residency

Bauhaus Lab 2021

Description: Bauhaus Lab is a three-month research program for scholars and practitioners in the fields of architecture, design, and curating. The aim of the Bauhaus Lab is to create an interdisciplinary research community which addresses a topic from the field of global modernism over a three-month period. Each Bauhaus Lab focuses on a modern design object that simultaneously serves as a thematic anchor and starting point for the collective mission of research. The program is held in English and is free of charge. At the end of the three-month period the findings will be presented in the framework of a joint exhibition at the Bauhaus Dessau. The 2021 theme is “Vegetation Under Power.”

Award: All participants will be provided with workspaces in the Bauhaus Building and receive a contribution toward their housing expenses and a modest per diem. The program includes field trips to various sites in the Anhalt region; the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation covers travel and accommodation expenses incurred during these excursions. Participants are expected to be present on site during the entire period of the program, to contribute to the collective research, and to meet regularly with the program organizers for follow-up and feedback.

Eligibility: International career entrants and postgraduates from the fields of architecture and design as well as young curators and design researchers can apply. People with profiles hitherto marginalized in Western academic and cultural institutions are encouraged to apply.
