Arts Writers Grant Program

Description: The Arts Writers grant supports both emerging and established writers who are writing about contemporary visual art. Ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 in three categories–articles, books, and short-form writing–these grants support projects addressing both general and specialized art audiences, from short reviews for magazines and newspapers to in-depth scholarly studies. Program also supports art writing that engages criticism through interdisciplinary methods or experiments with literary styles. “Contemporary visual art” refers to visual art made since World War II. Projects on post-WWII work in adjacent fields–architecture, dance, film, media, music, performance, sound, etc.–will only be considered if they directly and significantly engage the discourse and concerns of contemporary visual art.

Award: $15,000-50,000

Eligibility: To be eligible, an arts writer must be an individual applying for a project about contemporary visual art; an art historian, artist, critic, curator, journalist, or a writer in an outside field who is strongly engaged with the contemporary visual arts; a U.S. citizen, permanent U.S. resident, or a holder of an O-1 visa; at least 25 years old; a published author (specific publication requirements vary for each project type).

SPAM Publication Grant

Description: Through an annual series of Publication Grants, SPAM supports the authorship of articles or books by independent scholars, writers, students, and professionals in the following subject areas: the artistic contributions of the American modernists, and the history of public and private support for the arts in the United States. Publication Grants are intended to encourage non-academics to do original research, and to encourage academics to make their research accessible to the public. SPAM will include the work—published or unpublished—in all SPAM research archives and databases.

Award: Grants average $1,200.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from all individuals, but applicants with a clear and realistic publication plan will be favored by the selection committee.

Deadline: Applications must be received by March 15.

Critics-in-Residence in Architecture and Landscape Architecture

Description: Places seeks to build capacity in the ranks of design writers and to raise the cultural visibility and influence of the design disciplines. For more than a generation, the number of practicing design critics has been dwindling. Yet the need for informed and incisive criticism of architecture and landscape architecture remains pressing. Growing demands for greater urban equity and social justice; the accumulating impacts of the climate crisis; the rapid proliferation of new digital and material technologies; increasing calls for professional reform — all are posing challenges for the design disciplines and underscoring the importance of serious and sustained critical discussion. The Critics-in-Residence program will encourage authors to move beyond the limits of the traditional project review and produce wide-ranging essays that are conceptually rich and culturally ambitious, organized around some strong theme or set of ideas. For this inaugural round, two critics will be selected, one in architecture and one in landscape architecture. Residencies will begin in May 2021.

Award: Critics will be in (virtual) residence with the journal for a term of one year and receive a stipend of $7,500 to write four major critical essays.

Eligibility: The residencies are open to all. Particular consideration will be given to independent authors who are not already benefiting from institutional and organizational resources and support.

Description: Supports fieldwork, research, study, exhibitions, conservation and documentation projects, and training of professionals in fields associated with history, heritage, conservation and archaeology relating to:
1) the history of art, architecture, and material culture of the Islamic world before 1920;
2) the archaeological investigation of the Islamic world;
3) the conservation of artifacts, buildings, and material culture produced in or for the Islamic world before 1920;
4) libraries, museums, and other public institutions exhibiting the art and material culture of the Islamic world before 1920;
5) education and training associated with 1-4; and
6) conferences, exhibitions, and publications associate with 1-4.

Award: Up to £10,000; awards may not be paid directly to individuals and must instead be paid either to the institution to which an applicant belongs or to the institution at or through which an applicant is applying to conduct research or to study.

Bauhaus Lab 2021

Description: Bauhaus Lab is a three-month research program for scholars and practitioners in the fields of architecture, design, and curating. The aim of the Bauhaus Lab is to create an interdisciplinary research community which addresses a topic from the field of global modernism over a three-month period. Each Bauhaus Lab focuses on a modern design object that simultaneously serves as a thematic anchor and starting point for the collective mission of research. The program is held in English and is free of charge. At the end of the three-month period the findings will be presented in the framework of a joint exhibition at the Bauhaus Dessau. The 2021 theme is “Vegetation Under Power.”

Award: All participants will be provided with workspaces in the Bauhaus Building and receive a contribution toward their housing expenses and a modest per diem. The program includes field trips to various sites in the Anhalt region; the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation covers travel and accommodation expenses incurred during these excursions. Participants are expected to be present on site during the entire period of the program, to contribute to the collective research, and to meet regularly with the program organizers for follow-up and feedback.

Eligibility: International career entrants and postgraduates from the fields of architecture and design as well as young curators and design researchers can apply. People with profiles hitherto marginalized in Western academic and cultural institutions are encouraged to apply.

Architecture External Fellowship History / Theory Landscape Architecture

United State Capital Historical Society Fellowship

Description: This fellowship is designed to support research and publications on the history, art, architecture, or landscape of the United States Capitol and related buildings. Fellowship support permits scholars to use the extensive documents housed in the Office of the Architect of the Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. The proposed topic must directly relate to some elements of art or architecture within the United States Capitol complex: the Capitol, the congressional office buildings, the Library of Congress buildings, the Supreme Court buildings, and the Botanic Garden. It may include studies of individual artists, architects, or other historical figures and forces. The research must involve the resources of the Architect of the Capitol, including the architectural drawings, manuscripts, and reference collections, or material on the Capitol in the Library of Congress, National Archives, or other specific collections identified in the applicant’s proposal.

Award: Fellowship may be requested for a minimum of one month and a maximum of one year. Stipend is $2,500 per month, up to a maximum of $30,000 for a full year, pending the availability of funding. It is expected that full time will be devoted to research during the tenure of the fellowship. Research space will be provided in the Curator’s Office of the Architect of the Capitol. Limited support services also will be provided. Travel and research expenses are to be covered by the monthly stipend. Fellows are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation.

Eligibility: Graduates students enrolled in a degree program in art or architectural history, American history, American studies, museum studies, or decorative arts, and scholars with a proven record of research and publication may apply.

Baird Society Resident Scholar Program

Description: The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program was established to support the study of some of the Smithsonian Libraries’ most unique and valuable holdings: rare books and Special Collections. Stipends are available for individuals working on a topic relating to these collections, which are located in Washington DC and New York City. Please see website for information on collections.

Award: Stipend of $3500/month for up to six months; scholars are expected to be in residence at the Smithsonian full-time during their award to devote full-time effort to the research proposed and to be regular users of Smithsonian Libraries special collections. The scholar will have access to the Smithsonian Libraries’ other collections and patron privileges such as interlibrary loan services. Scholars may be invited to address an informal colloquium of Smithsonian Institution staff and fellows on the topic of his or her research.

Eligibility: Doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply.
