Stacy Lloyd III Fellowship for Bibliographic Study

Description: Awarded to one outstanding early-career scholar working in some area related to the history, art, and culture of plants, gardens and landscapes. The fellowship will be granted to an exceptional researcher who is developing a new body of research that would especially benefit from access to Oak Spring’s library. The award recipient will spend 2-8 weeks at Oak Spring where they will be able to meet with staff; explore the 700-acre landscape, the foundation’s efforts in sustainable land management, and the rare book library that holds over 19,000 objects including many examples of botanical art. Fellow will have time and space to work independently on their own projects during stay. The only requirement will be to give one 45-minute presentation with time for questions to Oak Spring Staff and any other fellows or residents on site.

Award: $10,000 grant and two-to-eight-week stay at Oak Spring

Eligibility: Eligible applicants must be early-career researchers completing a terminal degree, or who have completed a terminal degree within the past five years. The selected early-career researcher must be self-directed and able to work independently while on site. Applicants are expected to show exceptional promise with an ability to state how use of Oak Spring’s library will contribute to their research objectives, exceptional promise, good communication skills and excellence in what they have accomplished or plan to accomplish.

This fellowship will be granted to an exceptional artist who shows remarkable promise to contribute to a deeper understanding of the natural world and humankind’s place in it. NEH Digital Humanities Advancement Grants

Description: The Digital Humanities Advancement Grants program (DHAG) supports innovative, experimental, and/or computationally challenging digital projects at different stages of their lifecycles, from early start-up phases through implementation and sustainability. Experimentation, reuse, and extensibility are valued in this program, leading to work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. The program also supports scholarship that examines the history, criticism, and philosophy of digital culture or technology and its impact on society. In support of its efforts to advance digital infrastructures and initiatives in libraries and archives, and subject to the availability of funds and IMLS discretion, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) anticipates providing funding through this program. These funds may support some DHAG projects that further the IMLS mission to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations. IMLS funding will encourage innovative collaborations between library and archives professionals, humanities professionals, and relevant public communities that advance preservation of, access to, and public engagement with digital collections and services to empower community learning, foster civic cohesion, and strengthen knowledge networks. Award: Level I: $50,000; Level II: $100,000; Level III: $325,000 in outright funds, with an additional $50,000 in matching funds.

Eligibility: Proposals are welcome in any area of the humanities from organizations of all types and sizes.

Description: Program supports projects that interpret and analyze humanities content in primarily digital platforms and formats, such as websites, mobile applications and tours, interactive touch screens and kiosks, games, and virtual environments. All Digital Projects for the Public project should present analysis that deepens public understanding of significant humanities ideas; incorporate sound humanities scholarship; involve humanities scholars in all phases of development and production; include appropriate digital media professionals; reach a broad public through a realistic plan for development, marketing, and distribution; create appealing digital formats for the general public; and demonstrate the capacity to sustain themselves. All projects should demonstrate the potential to attract a broad, general, non-specialist audience, either online or in person at venues such as museums, libraries, or other cultural institutions. Applicants may also choose to identify particular communities and groups, including students, to whom a project may have particular appeal.

Award: Up to $30,000 (discovery grants); $100,000 (prototyping grants); and $400,000 (production grants).

Description: In response to worldwide disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Geographic Society is providing funding for projects focused on how humanity and the natural world have reacted to and are living through the unparalleled circumstances created by COVID-19 in order to better understand how this pandemic—or the threat of another—will shape our world for years to come. Proposed projects should seek to better understand and/or provide solutions to the situations created or magnified by the pandemic, thereby helping us to understand and address the challenges and changes of living in a COVID-19 world. This fund invites research, conservation, and technology projects on the following two topics:

Community-based and inclusive wildlife and cultural heritage site conservation.
Impacts of tourism changes on cultural heritage sites and wildlife.

Below are examples of the types of questions and projects that the Society would like to receive:
How have community and grassroots organizations dedicated to the conservation and protection of wildlife and cultural heritage sites been impacted by COVID-19? How have organizations continued their conservation activities during the pandemic? What types of new models or innovative approaches to conservation are being tried? With people unable to afford to stay in cities, how are rural communities shaped and changed by people returning? Given the ongoing economic crises due to COVID-19, what lessons can be applied post pandemic to support sustainable and just economic recovery in areas with high biodiversity and/or cultural heritage resources? How have changes in global and/or domestic tourism affected wildlife, protected area management, cultural heritage site conservation, and the livelihoods and well-being of nearby communities? 2021 Abbey Mural Prize

Description: The National Academy of Design invites artists, architects, arts and community-based organizations, and other nonprofits to submit applications for the 2021 Abbey Mural Prize, which awards grants to support the commission of public murals in the United States. Building on a tradition of public murals as instruments of social activism, neighborhood revitalization, and community engagement, the Abbey Mural Prize aims to broaden support and recognition of the vital role that murals play in making public space more open and accessible. Grants will be awarded for the creation or restoration of public murals, especially those that promote accessibility, serve local audiences, and inspire community dialogue. The Academy will hold an Abbey Mural Prize Information Session on March 23, 2021.

Award: Grants typically range from $10,000 to $40,000 USD in minimally restricted support for the production and installation of mural(s) on and within public buildings and on buildings owned by charitable institutions.

Eligibility: Applications are open to all artists, architects, designers, as well as arts and community-based organizations and other nonprofits. Project leads must be eighteen years of age or over. Project proposals must be for sites located within the United States, Tribal Nations, and U.S. territories including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Projects must be public and have start dates before June 30, 2022.

Description: Through an annual series of Publication Grants, SPAM supports the authorship of articles or books by independent scholars, writers, students, and professionals in the following subject areas: the artistic contributions of the American modernists, and the history of public and private support for the arts in the United States. Publication Grants are intended to encourage non-academics to do original research, and to encourage academics to make their research accessible to the public. SPAM will include the work—published or unpublished—in all SPAM research archives and databases.

Award: Grants average $1,200.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from all individuals, but applicants with a clear and realistic publication plan will be favored by the selection committee.
