Community-Focused Economic Mobility Grants

Description: The Bank of American Charitable Foundation works to develop strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations working to address issues fundamental to economic mobility and social progress in low- and moderate-income communities. The foundation welcomes proposals that address economic mobility in a community context, with a focus on affordable housing, small business, and neighborhood revitalization. Examples include housing development for vulnerable population through the construction or preservation of affordable single, multi-family, transitional, and supportive housing; sustainable development efforts creating healthy living environments through energy efficiency upgrades, retrofits, solar and other green building efforts; transit-oriented development efforts; community arts and cultural institutions that provide economic opportunity and contribute to the vitality and livability of communities; and environmental efforts through the preservation, creation or restoration of open space, parks, and community gardens. Award: $5,000-50,000 in larger markets; $2,500-25,000 in smaller markets.

Description: The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is accepting proposals for its 2021 International Research Seed Funding. The goal of the seed funding is to assist talented researchers in developing projects/ideas to a level that would secure additional, more significant, funding—in conjunction with the CTBUH. Research proposals should relate to the tall building typology/urban habitat, but are open to any topic/discipline, including but not limited to: architecture, construction, energy issues, energy harvesting, environmental engineering, façades, financial & cost issues, fire & life safety, geotechnics, humanities, infrastructure, interiors, maintenance & cleaning, materials, MEP engineering, policy making, resource management, seismic design, social aspects, structural engineering, systems development, urban planning, vertical transportation, wind engineering, etc. The proposals should have the potential to improve tall buildings and cities from a wide perspective. Architecture External Fellowship History / Theory Urbanism

Schwartz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture

Description: The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture supports innovative and cross-disciplinary research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Fields of study include Architectural and Urban Design, History of Architecture, History of the City, Historical Geography, and related fields. Projects should incorporate the holdings of the Gennadius Library (maps, topographical plans, landscapes etc.) and other appropriate resources of the American School of Classical Studies.

Award: Stipend of $11,500 plus room, board, and waiver of School fees. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the School for the full academic year from early September to late May. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library. Fellows are expected to participate in the academic life of the School.

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. holders within five years of receiving the degree. Open to all nationalities.

Description: In response to worldwide disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Geographic Society is providing funding for projects focused on how humanity and the natural world have reacted to and are living through the unparalleled circumstances created by COVID-19 in order to better understand how this pandemic—or the threat of another—will shape our world for years to come. Proposed projects should seek to better understand and/or provide solutions to the situations created or magnified by the pandemic, thereby helping us to understand and address the challenges and changes of living in a COVID-19 world. This fund invites research, conservation, and technology projects on the following two topics:

Community-based and inclusive wildlife and cultural heritage site conservation.
Impacts of tourism changes on cultural heritage sites and wildlife.

Below are examples of the types of questions and projects that the Society would like to receive:
How have community and grassroots organizations dedicated to the conservation and protection of wildlife and cultural heritage sites been impacted by COVID-19? How have organizations continued their conservation activities during the pandemic? What types of new models or innovative approaches to conservation are being tried? With people unable to afford to stay in cities, how are rural communities shaped and changed by people returning? Given the ongoing economic crises due to COVID-19, what lessons can be applied post pandemic to support sustainable and just economic recovery in areas with high biodiversity and/or cultural heritage resources? How have changes in global and/or domestic tourism affected wildlife, protected area management, cultural heritage site conservation, and the livelihoods and well-being of nearby communities? Award: Up to $50,000.

Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years or older. Only applications that propose activity in the applicant’s country of residence will be considered.

Deadline: Statement of interest accepted through 11:59 pm EDT, March 31, 2021. Applicants will receive decisions on their statement of interest by April 8, 2021. Full applications will be due by 11:59 pm EDT, May 19, 2021.

2021 USC Lusk Center for Real Estate Research Awards

Description: The USC Lusk Center for Real Estate is pleased to announce the availability of research awards beginning in July 2021. The stipends are to facilitate high-quality research that will eventually be published in the leading scientific journals. The broad topics should be related to real estate and urban issues. The Lusk Center is especially interested in proposals that focus on housing and real estate finance, non-residential real estate, urban entrepreneurship, urban poverty and segregation, neighborhood change, and local taxes and housing regulation. Studies can focus on the U.S. or any other country.

Award: Up to $25,000 per faculty member and $15,000 per postdoc or Ph.D. student.

Eligibility: USC faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and Ph.D. students are eligible to apply.
