NEH Digital Humanities Advancement Grants

Description: The Digital Humanities Advancement Grants program (DHAG) supports innovative, experimental, and/or computationally challenging digital projects at different stages of their lifecycles, from early start-up phases through implementation and sustainability. Experimentation, reuse, and extensibility are valued in this program, leading to work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. The program also supports scholarship that examines the history, criticism, and philosophy of digital culture or technology and its impact on society. In support of its efforts to advance digital infrastructures and initiatives in libraries and archives, and subject to the availability of funds and IMLS discretion, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) anticipates providing funding through this program. These funds may support some DHAG projects that further the IMLS mission to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations. IMLS funding will encourage innovative collaborations between library and archives professionals, humanities professionals, and relevant public communities that advance preservation of, access to, and public engagement with digital collections and services to empower community learning, foster civic cohesion, and strengthen knowledge networks. Award: Level I: $50,000; Level II: $100,000; Level III: $325,000 in outright funds, with an additional $50,000 in matching funds.

Eligibility: Proposals are welcome in any area of the humanities from organizations of all types and sizes.

NEH Digital Projects for the Public

Description: Program supports projects that interpret and analyze humanities content in primarily digital platforms and formats, such as websites, mobile applications and tours, interactive touch screens and kiosks, games, and virtual environments. All Digital Projects for the Public project should present analysis that deepens public understanding of significant humanities ideas; incorporate sound humanities scholarship; involve humanities scholars in all phases of development and production; include appropriate digital media professionals; reach a broad public through a realistic plan for development, marketing, and distribution; create appealing digital formats for the general public; and demonstrate the capacity to sustain themselves. All projects should demonstrate the potential to attract a broad, general, non-specialist audience, either online or in person at venues such as museums, libraries, or other cultural institutions. Applicants may also choose to identify particular communities and groups, including students, to whom a project may have particular appeal.

Award: Up to $30,000 (discovery grants); $100,000 (prototyping grants); and $400,000 (production grants).

Architecture External Fellowship History / Theory

Kluge Fellowships

Description: The Kluge Center encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library’s large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research is particularly welcome in the Kluge Fellowship program. The fellowship is open to scholars in the humanities and social sciences with special consideration given to those whose projects demonstrate relevance to the challenges facing democracies in the 21st century. Among the collections available to researchers are the world’s largest law library and outstanding multi-lingual collections of books and periodicals. Deep special collections of manuscripts, maps, music, films, recorded sound, prints, and photographs are also available. In-residence scholars have access to the Library’s specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. Further information about the Library’s collections can be found on the Library’s website.

Award: Fellowships are tenable for periods from four to eleven months at a stipend of $5,000 per month for residential research at the Library of Congress. The Kluge Center reserves the right to offer fewer months than originally requested. Fellows may be given residence at any time during the 18-month window after the fellowship letter is received.

Eligibility: Scholars who have received a terminal advanced degree within the past seven years in the humanities, social sciences, or in a professional field such as architecture or law are eligible. The fellowship is also open to researchers without the terminal degree in their field whose proposal meets the criteria for scholarly merit and demonstrates relevance to contemporary challenges. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals. Upon selection, and in accordance with relevant visa regulations, foreign nationals will be assisted in obtaining the appropriate visa.

Description: Recognizing the increasing importance of preserving our nation’s historic treasures the IFDA Educational Foundation established the Ina Mae Kaplan Historic Preservation Grant. The grant applicant must be involved in the interior furnishings industry or a related field and also involved in historic preservation/restoration of a public building or significant structure. The following are eligible activities and projects for which this Grant may be used: Obtaining services of consultants with expertise in areas such as architecture, planning, paint, wall covering or floor covering analysis, archeology, fund raising, media relations, education or graphic design. Include photographs or illustrations of the project, what role you would play and estimated costs, and timeline. Designing, producing and marketing print and video communications materials. Sponsoring preservation/restoration conferences and workshops. Designing and implementing innovative preservation/restoration educational programs. Financing an adaptive reuse project. Include photographs or illustrations of the project, what role you would play and estimated costs, and timeline.

Award: $2,000

Eligibility: Grant is to be awarded to an individual in the interior furnishings field, a design professional, or an organization involved with historic preservation/restoration.

Irma Dobkin Universal Design Grant

Description: Recognizing the increasing importance of universal design in improving the quality of daily living for all people throughout their life cycle, the IFDA Educational Foundation has established the Irma Dobkin Universal Design Grant. Universal Design is at its best when its concepts are incorporated as an essential part of all good design, including creative, aesthetic, imaginative, functional, and compassionate solutions that respect the human condition throughout a range of abilities, and in a way that encourages interaction among people of all ages and capabilities. The ability to design spaces that can be used by more types of people including adults and children with disabilities, as well as those who are aging, is essential for success in today’s marketplace. This Grant supports a project in the area of universal design in the following categories: Product Development; Design Project; Education; Marketing. Please see website for more details.

Architecture Building Science External Grant

NextGen Grant

Description: The Ray C. Anderson Foundation NextGen Committee requests proposals that would measurably and directly reduce existing or avoid future emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere: science-backed projects that are scalable to other initiatives, and creative, environmentally based solutions that improve social equity. Proposals will be given strong consideration if they are out of the research phase and currently being implemented or close to implementation, if they calculate significant reductions in greenhouse gases, and if they demonstrate meaningful environmental and social co-benefits. Proposals will not be considered that only focus on communication or climate education without measurable reduction of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), that focus solely on a localized area without scalability, or that are early in the research phase and narrow in scope. Schwartz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture

Description: The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture supports innovative and cross-disciplinary research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Fields of study include Architectural and Urban Design, History of Architecture, History of the City, Historical Geography, and related fields. Projects should incorporate the holdings of the Gennadius Library (maps, topographical plans, landscapes etc.) and other appropriate resources of the American School of Classical Studies.

Award: Stipend of $11,500 plus room, board, and waiver of School fees. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the School for the full academic year from early September to late May. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library. Fellows are expected to participate in the academic life of the School.

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. holders within five years of receiving the degree. Open to all nationalities.

Arts Writers Grant Program

Description: The Arts Writers grant supports both emerging and established writers who are writing about contemporary visual art. Ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 in three categories–articles, books, and short-form writing–these grants support projects addressing both general and specialized art audiences, from short reviews for magazines and newspapers to in-depth scholarly studies. Program also supports art writing that engages criticism through interdisciplinary methods or experiments with literary styles. “Contemporary visual art” refers to visual art made since World War II. Projects on post-WWII work in adjacent fields–architecture, dance, film, media, music, performance, sound, etc.–will only be considered if they directly and significantly engage the discourse and concerns of contemporary visual art.

Award: $15,000-50,000

Eligibility: To be eligible, an arts writer must be an individual applying for a project about contemporary visual art; an art historian, artist, critic, curator, journalist, or a writer in an outside field who is strongly engaged with the contemporary visual arts; a U.S. citizen, permanent U.S. resident, or a holder of an O-1 visa; at least 25 years old; a published author (specific publication requirements vary for each project type).

COVID-19 Science Fund

Description: In response to worldwide disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Geographic Society is providing funding for projects focused on how humanity and the natural world have reacted to and are living through the unparalleled circumstances created by COVID-19 in order to better understand how this pandemic—or the threat of another—will shape our world for years to come. Proposed projects should seek to better understand and/or provide solutions to the situations created or magnified by the pandemic, thereby helping us to understand and address the challenges and changes of living in a COVID-19 world. This fund invites research, conservation, and technology projects on the following two topics:

Community-based and inclusive wildlife and cultural heritage site conservation.
Impacts of tourism changes on cultural heritage sites and wildlife.

Below are examples of the types of questions and projects that the Society would like to receive:
How have community and grassroots organizations dedicated to the conservation and protection of wildlife and cultural heritage sites been impacted by COVID-19? How have organizations continued their conservation activities during the pandemic? What types of new models or innovative approaches to conservation are being tried? With people unable to afford to stay in cities, how are rural communities shaped and changed by people returning? Given the ongoing economic crises due to COVID-19, what lessons can be applied post pandemic to support sustainable and just economic recovery in areas with high biodiversity and/or cultural heritage resources? How have changes in global and/or domestic tourism affected wildlife, protected area management, cultural heritage site conservation, and the livelihoods and well-being of nearby communities? Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years or older. Only applications that propose activity in the applicant’s country of residence will be considered.
