Description: Supports fieldwork, research, study, exhibitions, conservation and documentation projects, and training of professionals in fields associated with history, heritage, conservation and archaeology relating to:

Description: Furthermore grants assist nonfiction books having to do with art, architecture, and design; cultural history, the city, and related public issues; and conservation and preservation—particularly work that appeals to an informed general audience, gives evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production, and promises a reasonable shelf life. Funds apply to such specific publication components as writing, research, editing, indexing, design, illustration, photography, and printing and binding. Book projects to which a university press, nonprofit or trade publisher is already committed and for which there is a feasible distribution plan are usually preferred. Recipients of Furthermore grants are located throughout the U.S. and abroad but mainly in New York City and New York State and its Hudson Valley.

Award: $1,500-15,000

Eligibility: Grant applicants must be 501(c)3 organizations; applications from individuals cannot be accepted. They have included civic and academic institutions, museums, independent and university presses, and professional societies. While grant recipients must have 501(c)3 status, the book projects assisted by Furthermore sometimes result in trade publication.

Lindsay Jones Memorial Research Fund

Description: Provides seed funding to support long-term scholarly agendas/research on the meaning and significance of the built environment. Applicants and proposals from a range of built environment disciplines (e.g., architecture, landscape architecture, sacred arts, urbanism, interior design, environmental psychology, material culture, phenomenology, etc.) encouraged. Project proposals should identify one of the four principal areas of the fund: scholarly research, practice, service, or teaching. Successful applications might propose projects in a range of venues and media including, but not limited to, scholarly writing, film or other broadcast media, built works or projects, community engagement programs, or educational innovation. Particular interest in projects that advance the ACSF Mission and its vision that the design and experience of the built environment can assist in the spiritual development of humanity in service of addressing the world’s most pressing problems. NEH-Mellon Fellowship for Digital Publication

Description: Supports individual scholars pursuing interpretive research projects that require digital expression and digital publication. To be considered under this opportunity, an applicant’s plans for digital publication must be integral to the project’s research goals. That is, the project must be conceived as digital because the research topics being addressed and methods applied demand presentation beyond traditional print publication. Competitive submissions embody exceptional research, rigorous analysis, and clearly articulate a project’s value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. All projects must be interpretive. That is, projects must advance a scholarly argument through digital means and tools. Stand-alone databases, documentary films, podcasts, and other projects that lack an explicit interpretive argument are not eligible. NEH – Mellon Fellowships provide recipients time to conduct research and prepare digital publications. Successful projects will likely incorporate images, video, audio, and/or other multimedia materials or flexible reading pathways that could not be included in traditionally published books, as well as an active distribution plan. Anticipated products must be published in digital form and include, but are not limited to, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, websites, virtual exhibitions, translations with annotations or a critical apparatus, or critical editions. Projects may be at any stage of development.

Haynes Foundation Major Research Grants

Description: The Haynes Foundation seeks applications and makes grants for research on major economic, social and political problems of the greater Los Angeles area. Preference is given to applied studies which, in addition to adding significantly to knowledge and understanding of issues, are judged to show promise of influencing policies and practices addressing these issues. The research project’s potential for publication and its use by the community are also taken into account. The Foundation is willing to consider requests for support in disseminating the results of the studies it funds. Major research projects concerning the history of Southern California will also be considered.

Architecture Design External History / Theory Residency

Bauhaus Lab 2021

Description: Bauhaus Lab is a three-month research program for scholars and practitioners in the fields of architecture, design, and curating. The aim of the Bauhaus Lab is to create an interdisciplinary research community which addresses a topic from the field of global modernism over a three-month period. Each Bauhaus Lab focuses on a modern design object that simultaneously serves as a thematic anchor and starting point for the collective mission of research. The program is held in English and is free of charge. At the end of the three-month period the findings will be presented in the framework of a joint exhibition at the Bauhaus Dessau. The 2021 theme is “Vegetation Under Power.”

Award: All participants will be provided with workspaces in the Bauhaus Building and receive a contribution toward their housing expenses and a modest per diem. The program includes field trips to various sites in the Anhalt region; the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation covers travel and accommodation expenses incurred during these excursions. Participants are expected to be present on site during the entire period of the program, to contribute to the collective research, and to meet regularly with the program organizers for follow-up and feedback.

Eligibility: International career entrants and postgraduates from the fields of architecture and design as well as young curators and design researchers can apply. People with profiles hitherto marginalized in Western academic and cultural institutions are encouraged to apply.

AACSRE Emerging Fellows Program

Description: The AACSRE Emerging Fellows Program provides research support intended to stimulate and extend research projects by scholars from public and private universities in the U.S. who have demonstrated promise and/or success in conducting research related to signage and the societal benefits of on-premise signs. Topics may include, but are not limited to: creative activity related to the design of new signs or the reuse of existing signs; engineering studies related to signs and traffic safety and mobility; analysis on the history of signs and wayfinding; research on the integrations of smart technologies within small and large scale signage applications and the impacts this technology will have on the urban environments; research on signage and wayfinding issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. CAC Individual Artist Fellowships

Description: The Individual Artist Fellowships program intends to recognize, uplift, and celebrate California artists. Fellowships will support artists from a broad spectrum of artistic practices, backgrounds, geographies and communities, whose work addresses themes including but not limited to race, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. In doing so, the CAC will showcase the centrality of artists’ leadership in generating social impact and the evolution of our traditional and contemporary cultures. The program identifies three career tiers at which artists may benefit from this support:

CAC Emerging Artist Fellows (2-4 years artistic practice; $5,000; ~70 awards);
CAC Established Artist Fellows (4-10 years; $10,000; ~50 awards); and
CAC Legacy Artist Fellows (10+years; $50,000; ~10 awards).

Fellowship grants support individual artistic practice through unrestricted funding. See website for more information.

Eligibility: California-based artists, 18 years of age and older, working in any artistic discipline, who reside primarily in California and have a history of artistic practice in California, are eligible.
