Deb Mitchell Research Grant

Description: The LAF Research Grant in honor of Deb Mitchell supports research projects that are relevant and impactful for the professional practice of landscape architecture. One grant will be awarded to support a research project that can be completed in a 12-18 month period that begins in summer or fall of 2023. The research must generate knowledge and insights relevant to the practice of design in order to increase landscape architecture’s capacity and impact.

Award: $25,000 

Eligibility: PI must be trained as a landscape architect and currently engaged in the field of landscape architecture as a researcher, educator, professional practitioner, or in some other capacity.

Deadline: Pre-proposals due Dec. 1, 2022; shortlisted candidates submit full proposal by March 1, 2023

2022 SOM Foundation Research Prize

Description: Intended to cultivate new ideas and meaningful research that addresses the critical issues of our time. Each year, two prizes are awarded to faculty-led interdisciplinary teams based in the United States to conduct original research that contributes to the SOM Foundation’s current topic. This year’s topic is a prompt to investigate the impact that air has in our world, from the unequal way pollution affects communities to the way it shapes spatial conditions and material innovations. How can air be considered while exploring new architectural environments, structural solutions, ecological strategies, and urban policies? See website for more info.

Award: $40,000 (two prizes awarded)

Eligibility: Open to faculty currently teaching at a professionally accredited bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD program in architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, urban design, or engineering in the United States. The research must be developed in a studio and/or seminar within the academic institution. The lead faculty member(s) will be expected to work in a collaborative manner with faculty from other disciplines, leading professionals, nonprofit organizations, and/or community representatives in addition to students enrolled in the studio and/or seminar. Collaborator(s) can be based worldwide. SOM Foundation affiliated members and SOM employees should not be included as part of the proposals. Faculty from previously awarded proposals are not eligible.

Description: The Public Scholars program supports the creation of well-researched nonfiction books in the humanities written for the broad public. It does so by offering grants to individual authors for research, writing, travel, and other activities leading to publication. The program is intended both to encourage non-academic writers to deepen their engagement with the humanities by strengthening the research underlying their books and to encourage academic writers in the humanities to communicate the significance of their research to the broadest possible range of readers.  

Award: $5,000 per month for 6-12 months

Eligibility: Writers with or without an academic affiliation may apply, and no advanced degree is required. NEH especially encourages applications to this program from independent writers, researchers, scholars, and journalists.

2023 Forge Prize

Description: This competition, established by The American Institute of Steel Construction in 2018, recognizes visionary emerging architects for designs that embrace steel as a primary structural component and capitalize on steel’s ability to increase a project’s speed. See website for more info.

Award: Three finalists will each win $5,000 and work with a steel fabricator before presenting their ideas to the judges–streamed live on YouTube. The winner will receive the $10,000 grand prize and an invitation to present at the Architecture in Steel conference, April 12-14, 2023 in Charlotte, NC.

Eligibility: Open to designers based in the U.S. who are either still obtaining licensure or have been licensed for less than ten years.

Schwartz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture

Description: The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture supports innovative and cross-disciplinary research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Fellows are expected to be engaged full-time in the supported research from early September 2023 to late May 2024 and are expected to participate in the academic life of the School. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA acknowledge the support of the ASCSA and be contributed to the Gennadius Library.

Award: A stipend of $11,500 plus room and board in Loring Hall, and waiver of School fees.

Eligibility: Open to practicing architects or researchers of all nationalities who are currently Ph.D. candidates or have received their Ph.D. within the last five years. Fields of study include Architectural Design and Urban Planning, History of Architecture, History of the City, Historical Geography, and related fields. Projects should incorporate the holdings of the Gennadius Library (maps, topographical plans, landscapes, etc.) and other appropriate resources of the School.

Description: Stochastic Labs awards fully sponsored residencies to exceptional engineers, artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs worldwide.

Award: Residencies are of variable length and include a private apartment at the mansion, co-working and/or dedicated workspace, shop access (laser cutter, 3D printer, etc.), a $1,000 monthly stipend, and a budget for materials. Residents become part of Stochastic’s creative community, participating in weekly dinners and invitation events.

Mahindra Center Postdoctoral Fellowships

Description: The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for six one-year postdoctoral fellowships on the topic of the environmental humanities, drawn from any humanistic discipline. Environmental humanities is interpreted in the broadest terms to include all parts of the world and historical eras. Topics may include (but are not limited to) humanistic approaches to climate change, biodiversity, social justice, environmental justice, food justice, regenerative practices, gardening, landscape, urban foraging, health, and animal studies.

Award: Fellows will receive stipends of $65,000, medical insurance, additional research support of $2,500, and (for those not already in residence in Greater Boston) $1,500 in moving expenses. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Harvard for the term of the fellowship.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from scholars in all fields whose work innovatively engages with the environment and the humanities. Applicants must have received a doctorate or terminal degree in or after May 2020. Applicants without a doctorate or terminal degree must demonstrate that they have completed all requirements for a terminal degree (i.e. dissertation defense) by August 1, 2023. Scholars from outside the U.S. are appointed under either the J-1 visa (Research Scholar status) or F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training), depending on their circumstances. If awarded a fellowship, the term of appointment for international scholars is September 1, 2023-August 31, 2024.

Center for Craft Teaching Artist Cohort

Description: Twenty-one mid-career craft artists will receive an unrestricted grant of $10,000 and participate in an 8-month cohort experience where they will be guided through training that encourages and sustains a generative practice a both artists and educators. Recipients will participate in creating a Teaching Artist Resource Kit to be completed by the culmination of the grant period’s end. A leading component of the Teaching Artist Cohort is to support a diverse cohort of mid-career artists with varying practices and career aspirations. Ideally, awards will be given to a dynamic group of craft artists whose practice includes working as teaching artists in schools, non-tenured educators, adjunct instructors, visiting artists, museum educators, and community and workshop instructors. 

Award: $10,000 grant and eight-month cohort experience

Eligibility: Proposals welcome from mid-career craft artists who teach. For the purposes of this grant, the Center for Craft defines a teaching artist as a practicing craft artist and/or maker who utilizes their skillsets and sensibilities to integrate their work and perspectives into a wide range of settings. Applicants must be 21 or older; eligible to receive taxable income in the U.S.; residing and working in the U.S. for the last two years and the duration of the fellowship; and have a continued full time studio practice for a minimum of five years and work as a teaching artist for a minimum of three years. Applicants cannot be tenured or tenure track faculty. See website for more info.
