Description: This grant is awarded to further the personal and professional development of an architect in early or mid-career through travel. Travel plans should be focused on a selected topic of interest to the individual rather than as part of a larger humanitarian or institutional endeavor. If appropriate, the winner may be asked to present at the Center for Architecture upon return.

Eligibility: Applicants must be US citizens with a professional degree in architecture. They must also be practicing architects, either licensed or unlicensed. Academics may apply but must also be practicing architects.

Description: SOM Foundation introduced the Research Prize to cultivate new ideas and meaningful research that addresses the critical issues of our time. Two $40,000 prizes will be awarded to faculty-led interdisciplinary teams based in the United States to conduct original research that contributes to the SOM Foundation’s current topic: Envisioning Responsible Relationships with Materiality. This year’s topic seeks to explore materiality from the micro- to the macroscale, bringing together designers and researchers from multiple disciplines in order to envision sustainable, responsible, and ethical relationships with materials and the communities that they come from. Eligibility: Open to faculty currently teaching at a professionally accredited bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD program in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design in the United States. The research must be developed in an academic studio or other research structure within the academic institution. The lead faculty member(s) will be expected to work in a collaborative manner with faculty from other disciplines, leading professionals, nonprofit organizations, and/or community representatives in addition to students enrolled in the studio. Collaborator(s) can be based worldwide. SOM Foundation affiliated members and SOM employees should not be included as part of the proposals. Faculty from previously awarded proposals are not eligible.

Description: The Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide support to scholars to prepare research manuscripts for publication. Preference will be given to applicants whose work supports the vision of AAUW: to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance. Fellowships are for tenure-track, part-time, and temporary faculty, as well as new and established researchers at universities. Time must be available for eight consecutive weeks of final manuscript preparation. While many recipients, especially full-time faculty members, will use the awards during the summer, recipients may use the funds at any time during the fellowship year.
Award: $6,000 is available for an eight-week grant period.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Tenured professors ineligible. Open to scholars who identify as women in all fields of study at an accredited institution of higher education or research. Description: Research grants of up to $15,000 may be awarded to a mid-career professional whose research project relates to the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture, and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States. Potential Kress Fellow projects could include the exploration of shared European and American influences in style, design, materials, construction techniques, building types, conservation and interpretation methodologies, philosophical and theoretical attitudes, and other factors applicable to preservation in both Europe and America. Description: The California Documentary Project (CDP) is a competitive grant program that supports the research and development and production stages of film, audio, and digital media projects that seek to document California in all its complexity. Projects should use the humanities to provide context, depth and perspective and reach and engage broad audiences through multiple means, including but not limited to radio and television broadcasts, podcasts, online distribution and interactive media, community screenings and discussions, in classrooms and libraries, at cultural centers, film festivals, and beyond. Research and Development grants are designed to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions in their earliest stages. Projects must actively involve at least two humanities advisors to help frame and contextualize subject matter throughout the research and development phase.
Award: Up to $10,000; grant request must be matched during the grant period by at least a 1:1 amount of cash or in-kind contributions from non-federal sources.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations or municipal/public agencies (including public libraries, museums, schools, universities, and tribal governments). California Humanities does not make grants directly to individuals; however, individuals may apply through an eligible tax-exempt fiscal sponsor.

Description: Quick grants are awarded three times a year (Feb., June, Oct.) to small-scale public humanities programs and projects which take place within one year from the award date. Description: Grants awarded to scholars who have recently received their doctorate in support of travel costs to libraries and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials; costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses. Franklin grants are made for noncommercial research and are not intended to meet the expenses of attending conferences or the costs of publication. The society does not pay overhead or indirect costs to any institution, and grant funds are not to be used to pay income tax on the award. Grants will not be made to replace salary during a leave of absence or earnings from summer teaching; pay living expenses while working at home; cover the costs of consultants or research assistants; or purchase permanent equipment such as computers, cameras, tape recorders, or laboratory apparatus.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a doctorate or have published work of doctoral character and quality. Doctoral candidates are not eligible to apply. American citizens and residents of the United States may use their Franklin awards at home or abroad. Foreign nationals not affiliated with a U.S. institution must use the awards for research in the United States.
