Description: This grant is awarded to further the personal and professional development of an architect in early or mid-career through travel. Travel plans should be focused on a selected topic of interest to the individual rather than as part of a larger humanitarian or institutional endeavor. If appropriate, the winner may be asked to present at the Center for Architecture upon return.

Award: Single or multiple awards of up to $25,000

Eligibility: Applicants must be US citizens with a professional degree in architecture. They must also be practicing architects, either licensed or unlicensed. Academics may apply but must also be practicing architects.

SOM Research Prize

Description: SOM Foundation introduced the Research Prize to cultivate new ideas and meaningful research that addresses the critical issues of our time. Two $40,000 prizes will be awarded to faculty-led interdisciplinary teams based in the United States to conduct original research that contributes to the SOM Foundation’s current topic: Envisioning Responsible Relationships with Materiality. This year’s topic seeks to explore materiality from the micro- to the macroscale, bringing together designers and researchers from multiple disciplines in order to envision sustainable, responsible, and ethical relationships with materials and the communities that they come from. Award: $40,000

Eligibility: Open to faculty currently teaching at a professionally accredited bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD program in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design in the United States. The research must be developed in an academic studio or other research structure within the academic institution. The lead faculty member(s) will be expected to work in a collaborative manner with faculty from other disciplines, leading professionals, nonprofit organizations, and/or community representatives in addition to students enrolled in the studio. Collaborator(s) can be based worldwide. SOM Foundation affiliated members and SOM employees should not be included as part of the proposals. Faculty from previously awarded proposals are not eligible.

AAUW Short-Term Research Publication Grants

Description: The Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide support to scholars to prepare research manuscripts for publication. Preference will be given to applicants whose work supports the vision of AAUW: to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance. Fellowships are for tenure-track, part-time, and temporary faculty, as well as new and established researchers at universities. Time must be available for eight consecutive weeks of final manuscript preparation. While many recipients, especially full-time faculty members, will use the awards during the summer, recipients may use the funds at any time during the fellowship year.

Award: $6,000 is available for an eight-week grant period.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Tenured professors ineligible. Open to scholars who identify as women in all fields of study at an accredited institution of higher education or research. Applicants must hold a Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., M.F.A., J.D., M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., D.S.W., or M.P.H. at the time of application. AAUW Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowships

Description: The primary purpose of the American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship is to increase the number of women in tenure-track faculty positions and to promote equity for women in higher education. This fellowship is designed to assist the candidate in obtaining tenure and further promotions by enabling her to spend a year pursuing independent research. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering and math fields or those researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.

Award: $30,000

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Tenured professors ineligible. Not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (not including branch or local awards or Community Action Grants). American Fellowships are open to scholars who identify as women in all fields of study at an accredited institution of higher education or research. The Samuel H. Kress Mid-Career Fellowship

Description: Research grants of up to $15,000 may be awarded to a mid-career professional whose research project relates to the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture, and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States. Potential Kress Fellow projects could include the exploration of shared European and American influences in style, design, materials, construction techniques, building types, conservation and interpretation methodologies, philosophical and theoretical attitudes, and other factors applicable to preservation in both Europe and America. Award: Up to $15,000

Eligibility: Grants are awarded only to individuals, not organizations. The Foundation does not fund university-sponsored research projects or dissertation research. Applicants must be mid-career professionals in historic preservation or related fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, architectural conservation, urban design, environmental planning, archaeology, architectural history, and the decorative arts. Richard L. Blinder Award

Description: The Richard L. Blinder Award will be presented biennially to an architect or other professional in a related historic preservation field for a proposal exploring architecture and preservation. The proposal may focus on a real project or it may be a polemical exercise; in either case, originality is highly valued. The proposal must advance architectural preservation in the United States. The product can be graphic, text-based or a combination of both and must be able to be shared with the architecture and preservation community. See website for more info.

Rome Prize

Description: For over a century, the American Academy in Rome has awarded the Rome Prize to support innovative and cross-disciplinary work in the arts and humanities. Each year, the prize is awarded to about thirty artists and scholars who represent the highest standard of excellence and who are in the early or middle stages of their careers. Fellowships are awarded in the following disciplines: ancient studies, architecture, design, historic preservation & conservation, landscape architecture, literature, medieval studies, modern Italian studies, musical composition, Renaissance and early modern studies, and visual arts.

Award: Each Rome Prize winner is provided with a stipend, meals, a bedroom with private bath, and a private workspace. Those with children under 18 live in partially subsidized apartments nearby. Winners of half- and full-term fellowships receive stipends of $16,000 and $28,000 respectively.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens; previous winners are not eligible to reapply. Rome Prize winners may not hold a full-time job during the fellowship term. See website for more info.

California Documentary Project Grants – Research & Development

Description: The California Documentary Project (CDP) is a competitive grant program that supports the research and development and production stages of film, audio, and digital media projects that seek to document California in all its complexity. Projects should use the humanities to provide context, depth and perspective and reach and engage broad audiences through multiple means, including but not limited to radio and television broadcasts, podcasts, online distribution and interactive media, community screenings and discussions, in classrooms and libraries, at cultural centers, film festivals, and beyond. Research and Development grants are designed to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions in their earliest stages. Projects must actively involve at least two humanities advisors to help frame and contextualize subject matter throughout the research and development phase.

Award: Up to $10,000; grant request must be matched during the grant period by at least a 1:1 amount of cash or in-kind contributions from non-federal sources.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations or municipal/public agencies (including public libraries, museums, schools, universities, and tribal governments). California Humanities does not make grants directly to individuals; however, individuals may apply through an eligible tax-exempt fiscal sponsor.

Humanities for All – Quick Grants

Description: Quick grants are awarded three times a year (Feb., June, Oct.) to small-scale public humanities programs and projects which take place within one year from the award date. Projects should be grounded in the humanities, show potential to provide high quality humanities learning experiences for participants and audience and demonstrate capacity for successful implementation. Appropriate formats include virtual and in-person community dialogues, reading and film discussion groups, oral history workshops, non-fiction workshops, speaker series, and many more activities based in humanities disciplines.
