Schwarz Fellowship at the Gennadius Library for Research on Urban Architecture

Description: The Schwarz Fellowship for Research on Urban Architecture supports innovative and cross-disciplinary research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Fields of study include Architectural and Urban Design, History of Architecture, History of the City, Historical Geography, and related fields. Projects should incorporate the holdings of the Gennadius Library (maps, topographical plans, landscapes, etc.) and other appropriate resources of the School.

Award: A stipend of $11,500 plus room and board and waiver of School fees. It is expected that the applicant will maintain a physical presence at the Gennadius Library during the tenure of the appointment from early September to late May. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library. Fellows are expected to participate in the academic life of the School.

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. holders within five years of receiving the degree. Open to all nationalities.

Architectures of Order – Fellowship

Description: “Architectures of Order” is an interdisciplinary research project of the Goethe University Frankfurt and Technical University of Darmstadt, with the Max-Polanck-Institute for European Legal History and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum as associated partners. The project investigates architecture as a cultural practice of ordering that manifests aesthetically, materially, spatially, discursively, as well as epistemologically. The fellowship program aims to expand the thematic scope and expertise of the resident research cluster as well as its national and international networks. The work of the fellow should demonstrate the connections with the goals of the project as well as its annual research theme. The theme for 2022, “Designing Order,” is dedicated to the architectural design process in its contemporary relevance and historical versatility, focusing on both the concepts of order that structure it and the new notions of order it produces. Award: 1-3 month research residency; monthly stipend of 3,200 Euro (to cover room & board, etc.); and roundtrip fare to Frankfurt am Main, GER.

Eligibility: Applications are welcome from applicants of diverse disciplinary backgrounds including but not limited to the areas of expertise of the project’s resident members: architectural history & theory, art history, cultural & media studies, history, sociology, and design theory. Applications are accepted from scholars of all career levels with particular interest in early career researchers. A chronological focus on the early modern period (1500-1800) is particularly welcome. Applicants required to hold Ph.D.

The Samuel H. Kress Mid-Career Fellowship

Description: Research grants of up to $15,000 may be awarded to a mid-career professional whose research project relates to the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of European art, architecture, and related disciplines from antiquity to the early 19th century, in the context of historic preservation in the United States. Potential Kress Fellow projects could include the exploration of shared European and American influences in style, design, materials, construction techniques, building types, conservation and interpretation methodologies, philosophical and theoretical attitudes, and other factors applicable to preservation in both Europe and America. Award: Up to $15,000

Eligibility: Grants are awarded only to individuals, not organizations. The Foundation does not fund university-sponsored research projects or dissertation research. Applicants must be mid-career professionals in historic preservation or related fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, architectural conservation, urban design, environmental planning, archaeology, architectural history, and the decorative arts. Applicants must be legal residents or citizens of the United States.

Rome Prize

Description: For over a century, the American Academy in Rome has awarded the Rome Prize to support innovative and cross-disciplinary work in the arts and humanities. Each year, the prize is awarded to about thirty artists and scholars who represent the highest standard of excellence and who are in the early or middle stages of their careers. Fellowships are awarded in the following disciplines: ancient studies, architecture, design, historic preservation & conservation, landscape architecture, literature, medieval studies, modern Italian studies, musical composition, Renaissance and early modern studies, and visual arts.

Award: Each Rome Prize winner is provided with a stipend, meals, a bedroom with private bath, and a private workspace. Those with children under 18 live in partially subsidized apartments nearby. Winners of half- and full-term fellowships receive stipends of $16,000 and $28,000 respectively.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens; previous winners are not eligible to reapply. Rome Prize winners may not hold a full-time job during the fellowship term. See website for more info.

Clark Institute Fellowships

Description: The Clark Art Institute’s Research and Academic Program (RAP) awards funded residential fellowships to established and promising scholars with the aim of fostering a critical commitment to inquiry in the theory, history, and interpretation of art and visual culture. RAP particularly seeks to elevate constituencies, subjects, and methods that have historically been underrepresented in the discipline. In addition to the general Clark Fellowships, which are open to any topic, time period, and geographic focus, RAP offers a number of special fellowships for specific research interests that are intended to nurture a variety of disciplinary approaches and support new voices in art history. In order to work toward this, they are introducing these new fellowships:

The Kaleta A. Doolin Foundation Fellowship supports projects that radically advance feminist perspectives and equal representation in the canon of art history.
Caribbean Art and Its Diasporas Fellowship seeks to support art historians, artists, critics, and writers who are engaging with the complexity of critical Caribbean scholarship, art, and visual practices today.
Critical Race Theory and Visual Culture Fellowship aims to support scholars who are working with critical race theory to integrate and reimagine new art histories while also engaging with the structural racism that has informed and built the discipline.
Futures Fellowship supports artists, educators, scholars, writers, and art critics who are reimagining the possibilities of museums, scholarship, and public engagement. Projects that examine social justice and the arts, reimagine the canon of art history, or consider the role of performance art in exposing erased histories are particularly welcome.

Award: Fellowships are awarded on a scale related to need and earnings, up to a maximum rate of $30,000 per semester. Travel to and from the Clark will be reimbursed for the scholar and an accompanying family member. Fellows’ tax liability to the United States government will be considered in accordance with the tax regulations of the Internal Revenue Service on a case-by- case basis. Housing, a private office, and a research assistant will be provided.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a PhD or demonstrate equivalent professional experience. They may come from the academic or museum worlds, or from other professional backgrounds, and may be residents of any country. They may be employed, full- or part-time, or be independent scholars, curators, and/or critics. The Clark does not award pre-doctoral fellowships. It is expected that all fellows be in good standing with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and have authorization [a J-1 Visa] from the INS that permits a fellow to engage in the activities for which he or she has been designated a Clark Fellow.

2021 IAWA Kristine Fallon Prize

Description: The IAWA Center announces the 2021 IAWA Kristine Fallon Prize, inviting professionals and scholars to extend research into an important arena – women in architecture who have made significant contributions to the field through their work practicing at large U.S. firms in the second half of the 20th century. With important contributions made by women at large firms fundamentally unknown, research that documents this information is urgent. The IAWA Mission encourages such research in addition to the goal of preserving archival materials related to the work of women who shaped the designed environment, thus preserving for prosperity a record of their achievements. The recipient of the 2021 IAWA Kristine Fallon Prize will be selected through a jury process. The award will be granted to the best original work that addresses the call above. In the event that the jury finds no submission of adequate originality, substance and quality, the jury may decline to grant the Prize.

Award: $5000 prize will be awarded in two installments: $2,000 will be made available to the recipient upon announcement of the award in early January 2022 with the remaining $3000 of the award granted upon the presentation of the work during the 2022 IAWA Center Symposium in March at Virginia Tech. To complete the record of the prize, a copy of the final published work must also be donated to the IAWA.

Eligibility: The work submitted should be recently published (within the last five years) or publication-ready articles, chapters, books, manuscripts, dissertations, or exhibition catalogs, and should advance recognition of women’s contributions in architecture as framed above.

Description: The Craft Research Fund – Exhibition grant is one of four categories that make up the Craft Research Fund, a visionary program dedicated to supporting scholarly craft research in the United States. The grant is intended to support scholarly research and is not for the creation of artwork. Examples of exhibition research might include: addressing work by significant craft artists; presenting a new understanding of the relationship between handmade production and digital technologies; placing American craft in a global context; or other topics that offer fresh perspectives within the field. Grant funds may be used to support research activities including travel for research, commissioning essays for contributors, documentation such as images or rights to use images or text, as part of the research for future exhibitions.

Award: Up to $15,000

Eligibility: Proposals welcome from museum, non-profit gallery, and independent curators. Applicants must be 18 years or older. Organizations must limit staffing/overhead costs to 15% of total budget ask. Applicants may not apply for both the project grant and exhibition grant in the same year. See website for full details.

Edilia & Francois-Auguste de Montequin Fellowship

Description: Provides support for travel related to research on Spanish, Portuguese, or Ibero-American architecture.

Award: $2,000 fellowship for an advanced graduate student and a $6,000 fellowship for a senior or emerging scholar

Eligibility: Graduate students who have completed their coursework and are engaged in doctoral dissertation research and senior or emerging scholars who have completed their PhD or equivalent terminal degree are eligible. The research to be supported must focus on Spanish, Portuguese, or Ibero-American architecture, including colonial architecture produced by the Spaniards in the Philippines and what is today the United States. The applicant must be a current member of SAH.

ACLS Fellowships

Description: ACLS invites research proposals from scholars in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences pursuing research on topics grounded in any time period, world region, or humanistic methodology. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant, which can take the form of a monograph, articles, digital publication(s), critical edition, or other scholarly resources. This program does not fund works of fiction (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects. See website for more info.

Award: ACLS Fellowships are intended to help scholars devote six to twelve continuous months to full-time research and writing. The awards are portable and are tenable at any appropriate site for research. The fellowship stipend is set at $60,000 for a 12-month fellowship. Awards of shorter duration will be prorated at $5,000 per month, with the minimum award set at $30,000. Independent scholars, adjunct faculty, and faculty with teaching-intensive appointments will receive an award supplement of $3,000 for research support, access to manuscript development workshops, or learned society conference attendance.

Eligibility: Open to untenured scholars who have earned a PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences on or after September 30, 2013. Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, Indigenous individuals residing in the United States through rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794, DACA recipients, asylees, refugees, or individuals granted Temporary Protected Status in the United States.
